16-year-old boy wanted $300 for sex

Dear Christine,
Having read the MIDWEEK NATION of August 22, I was shocked when I realized that I am not the only one who has experienced first-hand being solicited by young males.
This is about youngsters having sex with other men for money.
Last Sunday night, as soon as I reached home, there was this knock on my door. Yes, I do live alone. My children are all grown up and have left home, so you can deduce I am in my fifties.
Standing before me was this youngster, only 16, since he told me his age. He came complaining that he has to go back to school, his mother does not look after him and he wanted $300. I was shocked. He made all the proposals. Of course, he said this was his first time ever doing something like this, but that he really needed the money.
Christine, the last of my children is 24 years old. Why would I want to risk going to prison for committing a crime like that? Of course, I told him I could not help him. I gave him two soft drinks and sent him on his way.
After he left, I called my boss, who is an attorney-at-law and told him what happened.
It is true that parents must be very vigilant in regard to their children and ask them questions when they bring home expensive “gifts”. It is the duty of parents to look out for their children, especially those of school age. I really don’t know if this boy’s story is to be believed or not.

Dear AP,
Your letter only confirms what is perhaps widespread in our society, but believe me, it didn’t start yesterday.
There have been known cases of this kind of activity for quite some time now.
What is happening is that it’s on the increase. Just as there is female prostitution, there has always been male prostitution. And you’re right, parents need to question their youngsters – girls and boys – about the so-called “gifts” they receive from other adults.
Education is also vital and it is up to parents and other responsible, right-thinking adult members of our society to point our young people in the right direction. In my opinion, the Sunday School still plays a crucial role in the development of our youth, but sadly, Sunday School has become a choice these days. We need to return to the old ways.
– CHRISTINE
