Lowdown on swap

A paper trail dating back to the beginning of the year has shown that the decision to move B’s Recycling was made without Town Planning consultation, and that an “exchange” of land was proposed in order for the recycling plant to be sited at Bagatelle, St Thomas.
In response to Minister of the Environment Dr Denis Lowe’s stout denial of charges relating to the plant on Wednesday, attorney for the neighbouring Hoytes Village, St James residents, Senator Kerrie Symmonds, said yesterday that Government had done “everything wrong” in the matter and that Lowe himself had not been candid with the public.
Describing the situation as “a breach of public trust and maladministration of the highest order”, Symmonds, a former Barbados Labour Party Member of Parliament for the area, yesterday made available to the WEEKEND NATION a string of correspondence indicating, among things, that the Chief Town Planner and Environmental Protection Department were not consulted on the relocation of B’s Recycling from Cane Garden to Bagatelle.
Correspondence also showed that Cabinet approved the move in March, that the Ministry of Housing granted a licence for B’s to relocate, and that discussions were held about the exchange of a portion of land at River Bay, St Lucy, for the Bagatelle site and a lot at Fort Denmark, St Peter.
