James up for award

ST GEORGE’S – Grenada’s World and Olympic 400 metres champion Kirani James is among athletes shortlisted for the 2012 World Athlete Of The Year Award.
James, who won Grenada’s first Olympic medal in London this summer, is named in the International Association of Athletics Federations’ (IAAF) list of ten men and ten women for the award.
The 20-year-old Grenadian won the men’s 400m title in 43.94 seconds, the fastest time for the year.
Three Jamaican athletes are also in the running for the prestigious award. They include back-to-back Olympic double sprint champion and world record holder Usain Bolt, who is aiming to become the first man to win the prestigious award on four occasions.
The other two are Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who successfully defended her 100 metres Olympic title, and Yohan Blake, the double Olympic silver medallist.
The 20 athletes have been selected by an IAAF panel of athletics experts.
The Council of the International Athletic Foundation will select the male and female winners during a special ceremony in Barcelona, during the 2012 Centenary Celebrations on November 24. (CMC)
