DEFENDING CHAMPIONS CHARGERS inched closer to repeating as Goddard Enterprises Limited Division One volleyball kings when the action continued on Tuesday night at the Wildey Gymnasium.
Chargers thwarted front-runners Cawmere in four sets 25-14, 26-28, 26-24, 25-22. Caribbean Best Scorer Shawn Simpson could not hold Chargers at bay although Chargers hardly look the invincible squad from 2011.
Seemingly on the verge of losing the title about a month ago, the defending champions were without the services of Romel Agard, Mark Lewis and Damien Danzell.
Despite not being fully fit, Lewis and Danzell have appeared in key matches this season, and the Chargers have been playing much better.
Chargers have also benefited from the other teams’ misfortunes, including Progressive’s unexpected defeat of challengers Sandy Crest Medical Centre Deacons, and came back to help their own cause by beating Deacons to go to the top of the standings.
Knockout champions Deacons stayed in contention with an easy 25-22, 25-18, 25-13 win over Foundation United.
Deacons did not get the needed push to prepare for the much tougher title battles ahead as Foundation’s poor defence and attack point to why they are in the cellar.
Former kings Progressive struggled to a five sets victory over the Juniors 25-10, 22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-9.
Progressive and Deacons were scheduled to meet last night, but the inconsistency of Progressive would not have favoured a repeat win. Thus, the battle between Chargers and Deacons at the end of the month might very well decide the title race. (KB)
