OPPOSITION LEADER OWEN Arthur has put forward ten measures which he believes will enable tourism to compensate for the deficiencies in other sectors and drag the economy out of crisis.
Delivering the feature address yesterday at the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association’s fourth quarterly general meeting at Hilton Barbados, the former prime minister said the other major productive sectors had weakened and only a “stupendous performance” from the tourism industry would create a basis for economic growth and development.
The Barbados Labour Party (BLP) leader, however, noted that the tourism and hospitality industry was itself experiencing its greatest crisis in 60 years.
He pointed out that in ordinary circumstances it would take at least a six per cent increase in value added in the tourism industry to increase gross domestic product by one per cent.
