Several people employed at Barbados’ Overseas Missions will for the first time in a very long time receive increases in salaries and back pay dating back to 2008.
This after Minister of Social Care Steve Blackett moved a resolution to grant the sum of $3 689 443 from the Consolidated Fund to pay for the increased salaries and back pay for staff at the Overseas Missions as well as rent, utilities and shipping of personal effects for staff returning home.
Thanking those employees for their contribution, Prime Minister Freundel Stuart explained that the supplementary removed an anomaly which existed for sometime between the terms and conditions of service of local employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and people employed at our Embassies abroad.
“It was thought that an injustice was being done to employees at our Embassies abroad as a result of the differential terms and conditions. The missions abroad play a key role in assisting the Government to promote expanded diaspora policy. We could not pursue that policy without the cooperation of our Embassies abroad,” he stated. (MB)
