A 66-POUND WHITE YAM!
Ole Dam-Mikkelsen and the workers at his Gibbs Road, St Peter property unearthed the monster tuber this past week.
“I never expected that size. I planted some before but they never grew so big,” he said, adding that he had planted the yam back in April and had originally planned to harvest it before December.
Two workers took over an hour digging a hole around the yam before they could pull it out of the ground.
Dam-Mikkelsen, a Dane who spends eight months a year in Barbados, noted that he was not a farmer but planted crops as a hobby.
He said that in the South Pacific he had seen some other types of yams that tended to grow to greater length but had never seen such a big white one.
He plans to share the yam with other people. “I cannot eat all of it, but there are four other people who work here, so we will have to eat some and give some away,” he said. (LK)
