Raging blaze

Thousands of people living in the central parish of St Thomas were forced to deal with the ravages of an industrial blaze that erupted in Cane Garden yesterday and was still posing problems last night.
Just after midday, the metal dump owned by B’s Bottle Depot became a raging inferno, pumping thick, black smoke far and wide.
Members of the Barbados Fire Service, the Royal Barbados Police Force and the Disaster Emergency Management department (DEM) rushed to a scene of billowing smoke and arching flames.
Small explosions became the norm at the site, as thousands of rubberized tyres caught fire throughout the day. All across Barbados, from Christ Church in the south, to St Lucy in the north, the heavy smoke could be seen darkening the sky.
The DEM team was still on alert last night, in case there was need for people living in the direct line of the fire to evacuate their homes.
