Whereas the religious Christmas period seems to involve many Barbadians heading home for the holidays, the opposite seems true for the other religious period, Easter.
Yesterday, Grantley Adams International Airport was a hive of activity as hundreds of Barbadians left the country for the Easter weekend in pursuit of national glory, fun, inter-island or professional interaction, or for religious, sporting or educational reasons.
Topping the list were the CARIFTA teams, with the second batch of upbeat athletes heading off to Bahamas, and the swimmers to Jamaica.
Racking up the most miles would be The St Michael School’s sixth-form history group, who were off to Washington.
On the other hand, the most popular destination seemed to be Trinidad and Tobago, with Mapp Hill Cricket Club members embarking on their 20th annual trip to the twin-island republic.
The Sagicor Group of over 45 were also heading to Trinidad and Tobago, as was the 77-strong LIME Tele-Gathering group who were linking up with groups from all of the LIME-serviced countries
The Scotia Easter Extravaganza made up of 35 members from Barbados were winging their way to Grenada to spend the weekend with other parties from throughout the Caribbean. This is an Easter event that has been running for 25 years.
God’s Women of Favour, an inter-denominational group, was also going to the spice island for a conference held every Easter.
Eighty members of the Customs and Excise Department were looking forward to engaging their Caribbean counterparts in St Lucia – a tradition for the past 30 years. (KB)
