It is projected that 20 per cent of Barbados’ population will be age 65 or older by 2025 and Government is moving to ensure that there is a legislative infrastructure to ensure that the needs of the elderly are addressed in a comprehensive way.
That is according to Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy, who delivered the feature address on Sunday at an event to consecrate the Unique Helping Hands Senior School at the Soroptimist Village. He deputised for Prime Minister Freundel Stuart.
“There are certain realities that we have to deal with as a society – realities that we hear about all the time. This venture is very much in keeping with addressing some of those realities.
The truth is that we are an ageing society and there is a need to appreciate that fact and decide how well we can ensure that our vintage elements continue to be appreciated and continue to enjoy physical and mental comfort,” he said.
