Concerns are being raised in Guyana about the claims that five Guyanese women were victims of human trafficking here.
According to Press reports, relatives of two of the women questioned what was said to be their version of the goings-on in Barbados.
However, police here and in the South American country said yesterday that they would be intensifying their investigations and would not be swayed by media reports.
This is the latest twist in Barbados’ first human trafficking case in which five Guyanese women, aged between 17 and 21 years old, were held in a raid on a Nelson Street bar on April 18. Further investigations by the police’s Sex Crimes and Trafficking Unit led to the arrest of three people, including a 76-year-old. Two of the accused, including the pensioner, are on remand at HMP Dodds.
The Kaieteur News, however, quoted two women, one the aunt of the 19-year-old, the other the mother of the 17-year-old thought to be trafficked as saying they were not convinced about what really happened here.
Graclyn Reid, whose 19-year-old niece was allegedly trafficked, told the Kaieteur News that her niece was in Barbados for more than six months. She said that her relative would call, text and send money to her from Barbados.
