Mottley’s appeal to work together

Opposition leader Mia Mottley has pleaded with Government for the two sides to sit down together and try to find solutions to Barbados’ economic woes.
Speaking in the House of Assembly today on a resolution to allow Government to raise the limit on the amount of Treasury Bills and Tax Certificates it issues, Mottley appealed to the Government “to sit down with us.”
“How can it be …that it is okay to sit down with the unions; it is okay to sit down with the private sector; it is okay to sit down with the church, but the very people who are capable of constituting a government remain outside of the loop” she asked.
The opposition Leader charged Government had been unable to pay its bills for “six straight years” while claiming it had “almost doubled the level of debt in the market.”
“I would love Sir, to say that the Government has shared with us frankly the information as to where the economy is, where they plan to go to ensure that we are not in borrowing in perpetuity” the Opposition Leader said.
She concluded it was time the Members of Parliament came together “and work as one on the debt issue.” (GC)
