The?Barbados Fire Service has been taken to court by four officers who contend they have been unjustifiably overlooked for promotion.
The issue has resulted in more than 20 interviews for promotions in the Fire Service being placed on hold by the law courts.
The Barbados Fire Service Association is behind the action taken by Clarence Hinds, Stanley Absalom, Wesley Holder and Stephen Miller, who were at times acting in offices above their substantive posts for more than one year, which is the statutory period within which a vacant office in the Public Service must be filled, in accordance with Section 13 (11) of Public Service Act, 2007-41.
In the application for judicial review, Chief Fire Officer Wilfred Marshall has been named as the first defendant, Chief Personnel Officer Gail Atkins as the second defendant, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs Lucine Wharton-Isaac as the third defendant and the Attorney General as the fourth defendant.
The officers are contending that they all stand to be disadvantaged by an interview process that has selected people junior to them to fill their acting posts.
