The Ministry of Agriculture and some vendors in the Palmetto Square Market/Marhill Street area in The City may be headed for a confrontation over the issue of the vendors’ failure to occupy their rented stalls.
Recently, a vendor, who did not disclose her name, told the DAILY NATION she would like to get a space in the market but was told there were none despite a number of stalls remaining empty on a daily basis.
“[Some of] the stalls in there are empty, yet I still can’t get one; I got to be out on the street,” she said.
The vendor said she heard that people were paying rent for the stalls but were out selling on the street anyway.
A check with Manager of Markets Henderson Greaves revealed he was aware of the situation. He said it might come to a head soon but the status quo was being maintained for now.
