AS THE PREDICTED very active hurricane season steps in, Barbados Light & Power’s (BL&P’s) preparations are as comprehensive as they can be and in the event of an outage, it is ready to do its best to restore power as quickly as possible.
This from BL&P’s communications administrator Jackie Marshall-Clarke, as she spoke of the company’s state of preparedness for the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season, at the Department of Emergency Management’s (DEM)?Warrens Industrial Park, Warrens, St Michael office, yesterday.
According to Marshall-Clarke, BL&P – which served on the Standing Committee for Public Utilities under DEM and had a representative who liaised directly with the Department’s Command Centre – the internal Hurricane Procedures Manual was updated annually and outlined actions which should be carried out by the company prior to the hurricane season, and during and after a weather system. She said the actions focused on mitigation, damage assessment and restoration.
In following the manual, teams of inspectors checked all overhead lines to enable repair of vulnerable areas and all necessary work was either done or in progress, a heightened tree-trimming effort which supported the line inspections and commenced January 1, and stock levels of equipment and critical items had been boosted to “six-month” levels.
