“A formidable parliamentarian”

The following is a statement from former Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly Ezra Alleyne on the passing of Sir Richard Haynes:
I AM PERSONALLY SADDENED that yet another political colleague has left this mortal coil.
I was fortunate to be Deputy Speaker of the 1976-81 Parliament when Dr Richie Haynes was elected at the by-election in 1978. He brought with him a sterling reputation as a medical doctor and quickly established himself also as a formidable parliamentarian. His contributions to debate were incisive, relevant, well thought out, and he was a first-rate defender of the policies of the Democratic Labour Party.
His significant contribution to this country’s democratic traditions will attract the attention of future historians, but I remain confident that the record will show that he deserves to be listed among the great Barbadian politicians of all time. May he rest in peace. (SP)
