Dottin issue ‘nothing new’

THE?NATIONAL UNION of Public Workers (NUPW) finds it strange that there has been?a hue and cry in some quarters over the decision to send Commissioner of Police Darwin Dottin on administrative leave, but little demonstration of concern in 1996 on the removal of four senior Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) managers.
General secretary Dennis Clarke said the issue of the treatment of Dottin was not new territory for Barbados, since a similar thing happened in 1996, with Government sending hospital managers Neville Millington, Tennyson Springer, Keith Sandiford and David McCallister on special leave.
That controversial shake-up ended in the law courts with the four being awarded more than $200 000 in damages and court costs.
“When the NUPW was talking about supersession, no one outside our membership paid any attention to it, but now you have a Commissioner of Police and some of his members being superseded, all of a sudden it is major headline news,” he told the SUNDAY?SUN in an interview.
