Caribbean governments need to find ways of reducing the high taxes that are reflected in the cost of regional air travel, the Barbados Minister of Foreign Affairs Senator Maxine McClean has said.
She put forward this position while referencing LIAT, in which Barbados is the major shareholder, during a discussion on “40 years of CARICOM, Retrospect and Prospect” last Friday.
Speaking on the eve of the regional bloc’s annual summit in Trinidad and Tobago from Wednesday to Saturday, McClean made it clear that Barbados saw the benefits of LIAT, even though it had been losing money.
The minister conceded that airport taxes placed a financial burden on the airline which was transferred to tickets. (GA)
