BARBADIANS were last night bracing for heavy rain, high winds and thunderstorms from the first storm of the 2013 hurricane season to pose a threat to the island.
Tropical Storm Chantal was expected to pass less than 50 miles to the north of Barbados this morning.
Acting director of the Barbados Meteorological Office, Hampden Lovell, who described Chantal as “a minimal storm”, told the DAILY NATION that the rain was due to begin just after midnight and residents could experience storm force winds from about 5 a.m., with the centre of the storm passing around 8 a.m.
“Although it is a minimal storm there will be lots of rain, storm force winds and sea swells,” Lovell said as he urged Barbadians to batten down and stay safe until the all-clear is given.  (DP)
