The first phase of action by students at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill Campus against the planned introduction of tuition fees from next year is taking shape.
Within 24 hours of starting a petition aimed at reversing the decision, the Guild of Students has reported the collection of close to 1 000 signatures.
Damani Parris, the president of the association, told the DAILY NATION that the petition was opened for signing on campus and was taken to Heroes Square where the Barbados Labour Party held a mass meeting on Sunday night. The students plan to take their campaign to Bridgetown today.
Parris said the initiative would go on “for as long as it takes”. “The numbers reaching me is that we are close to a thousand signatures,” he added.
