Medical brain drain looming

What was supposed to be a crowning moment for doctors who recently completed their internships at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) is now one of concern for job security.
The 36 interns, who spent the last year at the hospital, say they are now qualified to register with the Medical Council of Barbados to practise.
However, lack of a job at the QEH as well as in other sectors has left them wondering if they will get to practise here or have to seek jobs and pursue specialization abroad.
As the Intern Of The Year Jamario Skeete was named along with outstanding interns Addison St John, Dana Forde and Ciel Harris, the young doctors, most of whom are in temporary posts at the QEH, spoke of their predicament.
Skeete, who is interested in specializing in cardiology, told the DAILY?NATION: “For long-term continuity, we have to be quite cognizant that the future may not be as bright as persons would have initially thought, which is a very harsh reality that persons who are now considering going into medicine are faced with.”  (LK)
