THE THEFT AND VIOLENCE associated with the cash for gold trade has substantially declined, say the police.
And they are praising the new Precious Metals And Second Hand Metals Act 2013, which requires detailed documentation for those buying, selling and exporting the commodity, for strengthening their powers in arresting the illicit activity.
That’s the good news.
The bad news is that some people are trying different ways to circumvent the requirements of the act, including conspiring with others to falsify required documentation concerning the ownership of the gold being sold. Also, there are reports of increasing incidents of people trying to barter gold jewellery suspected to have been stolen for brand-name clothes and shoes, in particular, at some stores.
