Sir Hilary: A past failure

PUTTING THE BURDEN of tuition fees on the backs of students is a policy that has been proven to fail in countries that host University of the West Indies (UWI) campuses.
Using the Mona Campus in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago’s St Augustine Campus as examples, Cave Hill Campus principal Sir Hilary Beckles said the Barbados Government should use those experiences as guidance as it prepares to go that route.
In a statement on the matter over the weekend, Sir Hilary said the introduction of 20 per cent fees had not ended well and questioned: “Why should Barbados follow these paths that have failed all parties concerned?”
The situation at Mona, Sir Hilary said, has not worked to anyone’s satisfaction.
