Fire victims get help from Canadian body

VICTIMS who lost their possessions to a fire in Canada two years ago received financial assistance yesterday.
Darcy Holder and Roland Davis were presented with cheques from the secretary of the Barbados Ex-Police Association of Toronto, Marson Brathwaite. They and another Barbadian – all workers in the Farm Labour Programme in Toronto, Canada – were affected by the fire.
Davis said it was most hurtful because they had finished work and went to the supermarket to get a few more items to put into barrels.
“It was three of us guys and we had three barrels each with clothes and foodstuff and we went to the supermarket to get a few small things just to pack in the top and close them off,” Davis said.
Holder said the experience was the most hurtful he had ever experienced, considering the things he lost in the fire.
“Tears came to my eyes. It was a horrible night,” he said.
Brathwaite said the association helped ex-policemen and fire officers and also offered programmes to assist individuals in their times of need and loss. The funds for Davis and Holder were raised at one of the association’s annual functions. (LK)
