KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC) – Cuba’s new Ambassador to Jamaica, Bernardo Guanche Hernandez, says his country is looking to deepen cooperation with Jamaica in the area of trade.
“The bilateral relations between our two countries have reached their highest points so far and we are considering ways to improve and strengthen these relations even more. We think that we could further this relation specifically in the field of trade,” he said.
Hernandez was part of a delegation at a recent Jamaica Information Service (JIS) Think Tank, to discuss the upcoming Second Meeting of Energy Ministers of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) scheduled to take place from October 24 to 25 in the western parish of James.
He replaces Yuri Gala Lopez, whose four-year tour of duty ended in September.
Hernandez expressed gratitude for Jamaica’s continued support to Cuba in relation to the commercial, economic and financial embargo partially imposed by the United States on the country.
Despite the embargo, Hernandez said Cuba continues to enjoy cooperation with about 70 countries, including Jamaica, in the fields of sport, education and health care.
Jamaica and Cuba have over 40 years of relations having established diplomatic links in 1972.
