OUTSIDE THE PULPIT: Good and bad of technology

Through all the changing scenes of life,  In trouble and in joy, The praises of my God shall still. My heart and tongue employ. – Hymn 290 A.M. Verse 1
These days we are living in a world that is driven by technology in one way or the other – with the Internet; tablet, computer, laptop, fax machines, cell phone and Skype, you name it and it is there. Technology is good and it can also be bad, it all depends on how it is used. I think that the good outdoes the bad.
I am not one of those persons who are driven by this technology. But yet I am aware that it is the heart of many professional and business persons. They have many of their contact numbers stored in their cell phone and usually if they forget it at home, they will return for it, because they will not be able to function for that day.
Yet they are some persons who use the social media badly and are annoyed when they produce negative results.
We are living in an age, where technology can and will make a person’s personal business everybody’s business. As a result of the same technology the world has become very small and with the advancement in technology the world will get smaller and smaller.
These days through Skype, one can be any part of the world and yet communicate with others another side of the world, seemingly face-to-face. It is really a changed world and it keeps changing. I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to young people, especially school children, to listen to the good advice which is given by adults and also from those in authority.
You must be concerned about your actions, for at the end of the day you will have to pay for it, whether it is good or bad – social media can make or break you.
Since we are living in this type of world, we have to be very careful, by our actions in what we say to others and what we do to others.
Take for example these days I have found out myself that if I am at any function or gathering, persons will be very careful about what they will discuss and will say to me. “We have to be careful about what we say, because you will write about it,” they say.
This kind of comment usually comes from adults who are very concerned about not offending others by what they will say. It is all because of social media. Too often people forget that we are all human beings and we do have feelings.
I now take this opportunity to appeal to the Ministry of Education to enforce the law about taking cell phones to school. Stop the talk and act now.
