Construction magnate Sir Charles Williams is locking horns with his biggest competitor over a $50 000 community donation the latter announced three days ago.
On Thursday, in an interview with the SATURDAY SUN, Sir Charles poured scorn on the Jada One Idea project announced on Wednesday by chairman of the Jada Group, Bjorn Bjerkhamn, which will see Barbadians voting for a community project that will benefit from a $50 000 injection by the company.
“I am delighted that at last Mr Bjerkhamn has demonstrated that he is a follower. But please compare it to the following by our company:
• Four acres in Foster Hall, St John, donated in 1970s.
• Four and half acres for a playing field at Lears, St Michael, in 1980.
• Another four acres for a football field at Lears in 2007
• Five acres to the old people’s home 12 years ago.”
Sir Charles, the driving force behind the luxury polo and residential complex at Apes Hill, added: “Tell Mr Bjerkhamn for me that I am delighted to see him following, but he should try to match that to the two and a half acres donated to the University of the West Indies, with an estimated value of $30 per square foot . . . . Work out the arithmetic and see if that is not $3.2 million.
