Tax hitch?

There seems to be confusion over another tax measure announced in the August 13 Budget by Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler. This time it relates to the proposed 15 per cent tax on lottery winnings.
Dentonia Brewster, site operations manager at GTech, operators of The Barbados Lottery, said yesterday he was informed by the Ministry of Finance in a letter dated October 11 that the ministry was no longer pursuing the proposal. That letter was in response to queries he made about the tax in correspondence sent to the ministry on August 26.
Reading the letter, Brewster said: “I have been directed to inform you that following a review of the information submitted on the distribution of business for 2012 and January to July 2013, the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs decided that it would not be prudent to go ahead with a deduction of a 15 per cent tax on lottery winnings since such a tax would not yield the required revenue. Please be guided accordingly.”
However, when the DAILY NATION contacted Sinckler by telephone, he said that as far as he knew the tax would be coming.
“It hasn’t been implemented but I don’t know that we are not implementing it,” he said. “As far as I know the legislation for all of those things is being prepared to be taken to Parliament this month.”
