A taxi driver used his newly-acquired defensive driving skills in saving the life of a toddler yesterday and was deemed a hero by two American visitors, including an Afghan veteran relieved that he had avoided witnessing another tragedy.
Around 11:45 a.m., Trevor Lloyd was taking visitors Gary West, a captain in the United States Army, and his wife Diana from the Crane Resort to Bridgetown when he saw the child running into the path of an oncoming car on Thornbury Hill, Christ Church.
He managed to swerve his taxi in front of the car, averting a fatality and a collision.
Lloyd’s reaction time and situation awareness so impressed his passengers that they called the DAILY NATION to seek public acknowledgement of their “hero”.
“The toddler was running into the road and Mr Lloyd laid down his horn, waved his hand and positioned the vehicle to encourage oncoming traffic to stop,” Gary said.
“He then got out of his van and picked up the boy who was in tears and carried him, took him and placed him in his mother’s arms.
“If Mr Lloyd did not do what he did in the time he did it in, him and his wife would have witnessed the death of an infant instead of enjoying a good day shopping in The City,” the army captain said.
