DEAR CHRISTINE: She’s afraid I catch the HIV

Dear Christine,
I trust that all is well with you and that you can help me with my concern.
I have been seeing a woman for the past six months and she seems like a great catch and match for me in many ways.
For the past four years I have worked as a volunteer, spending time with adults and children who are HIV-positive. I enjoy my time with these adults and children since many of them just need someone to listen to them and love them.
My new-found love is a very caring and loving individual who respects the work I do to help others. However, she is scared to death about being intimate with me because she thinks I am at high risk of getting the virus myself.
I take all the necessary precautions when I’m with these adults and children, and I always wear gloves. Should I ask my friend to consult with some experts on the disease? Her fear is preventing what could be a beautiful, lasting, committed relationship.

Dear D.L.C.,
First, allow me to commend you for the decision you’ve taken to work with individuals who are HIV-positive.
Concerning the matter at hand, I think it would be an excellent idea for your friend to be educated concerning HIV/AIDS. She must be told that you cannot get AIDS from spending time with those who are infected with this disease.
Please insist that she speak with someone at the National HIV/Aids Commission or a medical doctor.
– CHRISTINE
