LOCAL HOTELIERS are hoping North America’s bitter cold and travel chaos don’t spoil their business this winter.
Executive vice-president of the Barbados Hotel & Tourism Association (BHTA), Sue Springer, said yesterday that if it persisted, the bleak weather which triggered more than 2 000 flight cancellations in the United States and Canada, could hurt local business prospects.
“The severity of the impact will depend, of course, on how long this sort of weather persists, but we are hoping the weather will change for the better so flights will be back on track,” she told the SATURDAY SUN.
She said that while a number of hotels had reported good bookings for the winter, “if we can’t get the tourists here, then those good projections will be off target”.
She reported that so far individual BHTA members had not registered their concern about the problems in the United States and Canada but said she knew they were all watching the weather situation.
Flights were cancelled yesterday as a winter storm swept over the Northeast of the United States, dropping nearly two feet of snow just north of Boston and shutting down major highways in New York and Pennsylvania.
