JUST LIKE THE heavy rain, Reifer’s reign all but came tumbling down yesterday.
Defending champs Reifer House (Yellow) will have it all to do on Monday if they are to retain their St Jude’s sports title after surrendering a substantial lead to rivals Kirton (Orange) and Watts (Purple) during the athletics action at Greens, St George.
With just the cricket ball remaining, last-placed Reifer ended a rain-affected day with 432 points – 54 back of Watts (486) and a further seven behind leaders Kirton (492).
This was after Reifer found themselves in the middle of a tightly-packed race where just nine points separated the top from bottom in what promised to be an enthralling day of action.
But the lead got away from the champs, with victor ludorum favourite Ranaldo Nicholls piloting Kirton’s charge following victories in the Under-13 boys’ 100, 200 and 400 metres.
Watts’ star athlete Kayleigh Blenman did likewise in the girls’ equivalent after also doing the sprint double on the way to a meet best 30 points.
Such was Blenman’s dominance on the day that she even overturned what should’ve been an insurmountable 25-metre gap to haul in Kirton’s Amaris Bourne just before the line to anchor her team’s victory in the 4×100 relay.
Nicholls didn’t have it so hard, though’ as Teondre Hinkson had already given the side a big lead after just the second leg which was never relinquished.
It was one of two relay victories on the day for Kirton, who also took home the junior boys relay when a gritty Jaquon Ward held of twin brothers Jason Bruce (Watts) and Jayden Bruce (Reifer) on the line.
At least Reifer managed to take the first relay after beating their rivals by a comfortable margin in the junior girls 4×100. (JM)
