WHEN THE DUST HAD SETTLED, students of St Stephen’s were left singing the blues after an enthralling end to their annual school sports at Kensington Oval yesterday.
Holding a slender two-point lead heading into the day’s final event, the Under-13 boys 4×100 metres, Blue house’s Nathan Roett produced a blistering run in the final leg to surge to victory, allowing Blue to edge Yellow for their second consecutive title.
The defending champions finished on 455 points, 10 ahead of Yellow (445), with Red (408), taking third position and Green fourth on 404 points.
Ironically though, Red and Green produced the victor and victrix ludorum respectively.
Competing in the Under-9 boys’ division, eight-year-old Ziko Rogers was the most outstanding male athlete, finishing with 33 points.
Kiara Payne claimed the victrix ludorum title, dominating the Under-11 girls on her way to amassing 35 points.
The robustly built Rogers won the 80 metres (12.70), 100 metres (15.50) and 150 metres (26.00), relegating his main rival, Mikhail Grant-Bennett, to second place in all three races.
Rogers also placed sixth in the cricket ball throw. Payne too was unmatched in the sprint events, winning the 100 in a time of 14.30, 200 (34.20) and the 400 metres (1:20.80), while also placing fourth in the cricket ball throw.
Roett also had an outstanding day, being crowned the Under-13 boys’ divisional champion after accumulating 28 points. The impressive Janae Jordan of Yellow house captured the girls equivalent after also dominating the sprint events.
