The battle against the mosquito-borne chikungunya disease will intensify next week when top health officials set out for a first-hand inspection of possible breeding sites.
They are assuring Barbadians that there will be no covering up of the disease if any cases are discovered on the island. Chikungunya, a viral disease which causes symptoms similar to dengue, has been detected in a few Caribbean islands.
Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Health Tennyson Springer told the DAILY NATION yesterday that he would be joined by other senior officials in the ministry, including the chief environmental officer, in a walk-through of certain areas. He explained that the ministry had been continuing its emergency fogging of specific areas even in the dry season to head off any cases.
Some of the targeted areas with reportedly high mosquito populations in the dry season have been identified in Christ Church, particularly Chancery Lane, St Lawrence, Harts Gap, Atlantic Shores and Enterprise. In St Michael, some of the areas where fogging has been concentrated are Halls Road, Martindales Road, Deighton Road, Paddock Road and Green Hill.
