If you are talking about road domination in Barbados, you can add the name Oein Josiah to the list of Jerome Blackett, Carlie Pipe, Dominique Marshall, Veta Batson and Rodney Blackman.
On Monday, Josiah proved to be one of six regular champions in the annual ICBL Family Walk & Run that was held to help people suffering with asthma.
He stormed home first in the 5K run that attracted 400 participants. Hakeem Newton and Lester Phillips finished second and third, respectively, in that event.
Pipe won the women’s 5K with Elizabeth Williams second and Angela Skeete third. Times were not available for the 5K as confusion ensued at the end of the events with some runners being inadvertently registered as walkers.
That confusion saw the men’s 5K walk winner Blackman being given a prize for his age category, only to later discover that a primary school runner had been given the first-place prize for the walk. At that stage Blackman remarked: “With a time like that in a 5K walk he should be in the Olympics.”
Blackman led home the field with arch-rival Dudley Harewood second and Eon Mitchell third. Batson finished ahead of Matrid Griffith and Marlene Stewart in the women’s 5K walk.
However, although his name and time could not be initially located, Blackett powered home in his traditional sprint and an added salute in a time of 35.11 minutes in the men’s 10K run, leaving Mark Greenidge second in 37.02 and Orin Josiah third with a time of 39.46.
Marshall won the women’s 10K in 42.37 with Elisa Whitehouse (44.49) second and Amanda Maximillien (46.57) third.
Shawn Cooke won the wheelchair event, in which there were only two competitors.
Close to 1 500 runners and walkers took part, with Eden Lodge Primary capturing the Primary School Challenge and a number of individual awards.
Chief executive officer Dexter James joined 161 other employees from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital to be the largest work group, with A One Fit entering 53 participants and Purity, 42.
After the event, in which Monsignor Vincent Blackett took part, hundreds of the participants still found energy to engage in Zumba and other high-energy dances for over an hour.
