Barbados’ top golfers and other recreational players, will be on the greens and fairways this weekend in a new major tournament at the Barbados Golf Club (BGC).
It’s called the Digicel/Virgin Atlantic Barbados Golf Club Open and will be played on Saturday and Sunday over 36 holes at the Durants course in Christ Church.
Tournament details were revealed in a media conference recently hosted by organisers and sponsors.
Digicel’s commercial director Alex Tasker said the tournament will be an annual one and his company was excited to be part of such a tournament which is aimed at exposing more new players to golf.
He said Digicel would also continue to support golf and the ongoing junior academy at the BGC.
Regional caribbean manager of Virgin Atlantic, Nick Parker, said Virgin’s support of the Open marks the start of a big year for golf in Barbados, which includes the hosting of the Virgin Atlantic Swingers final in November.
“Virgin Atlantic is happy to be on board. Golf is a major part of the sports-tourism opportunities for Barbados and we want to get both visitors and local players involved.”
“The Barbados Golf Club is a great place for golf and we are happy to partner with Digicel and the BGC in staging what I’m sure will be a very successful Open tournament,” said Parker.
General manager of the BGC, Betty-June Leacock, and operations manager Dave Barnard, both thanked the sponsors and revealed that some very attractive prizes were at stake in the two-day championship, thanks to the generosity of several sponsors.
Among the prizes, Leacock said, were trips to London, mobile phones, complimentary data packages and stays at leading hotels.
Barnard said the tournament will embrace players of all ages and skill levels and the course was in good shape. (PR)
