The Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP) are looking for a repeat.
But the defending Barbados Football Association’s Premier League champs were given a tough pill to swallow when they went down to Weymouth Wales 2-0 Tuesday night at the National Stadium.
BDFSP were looking to edge closer to retaining their Premiership crown but Wales had a different agenda on the night.
Nineteen-year-old forward Jadai Clarke continued to display a hunger for scoring goals and decided to take a double bite out of the BDFSP.
Clarke opened the scoring in the seventh minute when a corner by Carl Joseph found him at the far post. He held off his marker brilliantly, turned and shot from close range.
In a very aggressive and scrappy encounter, referee Gillian Martindale handed out seven cautions in total.
And Clarke’s second goal in the 43rd minute was testimony to the type of match it was for him. A free kick from just outside the BDFSP area ricocheted off the wall and into the area where a melee took place. Clarke fearlessly bundled the ball over the line while battling a number of BDFSP defenders.
Some fine goalkeeping by Bentley Springer and brave, collective defending prevented the defending champions from registering a goal on the night.
Also Tuesday night, strugglers Pharmaceutical Plus Cosmos and Silver Sands gathered their first points of the second round, drawing 1-1.
Cameron Lewis handed Silver Sands the lead in the 37th minute but Donovan Lavine converted a spot kick in the 90th minute to take a share of the spoils to Speightstown.
The result kept Cosmos in the relegation zone but Silver Sands are just a mere five points above it with four games remaining.
