Businessman Peter Boos is unhappy with the Westminster system of government and is calling on civil society in Barbados to take charge.
Additionally, he has suggested that a collective non-governmental body work along with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to turn around Barbados’ economic fortunes.
Yesterday, Boos blamed the Westminster model for “facilitating” the current state of affairs in the island and charged there was “a deep and urgent crisis” that must be immediately addressed by the entire nation.
“Under our current governance model our elected leaders essentially proceed as they please with often little reference to manifesto promises and virtually zero performance measurements or accountability,” Boos said.
He contended that the economic decline was due to governmental actions and decisions taken “many years ago”, the results of which were now being seen and had “nothing to do with the 2008 financial crisis and subsequent recession”.
“Disrespect for the law, the Government’s failure to settle its liabilities as they fall due and to continue to purchase goods and services knowing that they don’t have the money to pay promptly is a serious failure of governance,” he told a meeting of the Rotary Club today at Hilton Barbados.
