Self-employment is gaining more credence locally.
This is the view of permanent secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, Ruth Blackman as she addressed the orientation and opening of a training programme for 60 entrepreneurs at the Ministry’s Haggatt Hall’s offices on Friday.
“Technological advances, changing market demands and the prevailing economic conditions all conspire to impact the ability of young people in particular to find employment,” she said.
“So self-employment is gaining more and more credence as a viable career option,” Blackman added.
The permanent secretary said the month-long training programme by the Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme (YES) would give entrepreneurs an opportunity to actively consider self-employment as a viable alternative.
She said the programme will equip the young women and men with the knowledge, skills and tools to “create your own businesses and generate employment for others” which, Blackman added, was an important component of entrepreneurship. (H-LE)
