Lesser lights shine in Silver Hill

Lesser-known players seized the opportunity to shine when the Silver Hill Road Tennis Championship continued on Monday night at the Silver Hill courts.
Julian “Snake” Quimby and Chesterfield “Boy-Boy” Brewster were brilliant in their straight-sets victories. Quimby, in his unflappable style, destroyed Rodney Greaves 21-9, 21-15 while Brewster thrashed Tyrone “Picker” Jones 21-7, 21-10.
Stig Merrit was given a scare by former table tennis star Abbie “Playboy” Clarke before Merrit won 21-18, 22-24, 21-16, with fatigue slowing both players in the decider.
Jerry Harris showed that he can challenge some of the big guns by silencing Clyde “Airlock” Griffith 21-10, 22-20 after trailing 7-17 in the second game. So rattled was Griffith when Harris locked the scores at 20 that Griffith served into the net, handing his opponent an easy point and then the match.
Taxi man Lloyd “Dick Man” Burke then drove all around Winston “Ballies” Padmore to win the night capper 21-14, 21-12.
The in-house games saw Calvin Prescod beating Henry Rollins 21-16, 21-13, Shawn Browne defeated Peter Johnson 19-21, 21-16, 21-19 and Roger Daniel pipped Rohan Went 22-20, 20-22, 21-19.
The action continues this evening from 7 p.m. (KB)
