BWU to meet NCC workers today

THE BARBADOS Workers’ Union (BWU) is meeting with its National Conservation Commission (NCC) members this afternoon to discuss the latest developments over the termination of nearly 200 employees.
The 3:30 p.m. meeting at the union’s Harmony Hall, St Michael, complex follows a call a week ago by some BWU delegates at the NCC for the island’s biggest labour representative to try to settle the dispute – over who should be laid off and who should keep their jobs – outside of the Employment Rights Tribunal (ERT).
That recommendation was reportedly made by the bargaining committee at the NCC during a meeting with BWU general secretary Sir Roy Trotman, who was on leave following surgery.
It was the BWU which triggered the mechanism to have the tribunal hear the case, after reporting no progress towards a settlement despite mediation by Minister of Labour Dr Esther Byer Suckoo and Chief Labour Officer Vincent Burnett.
