THE DIVORCE RATE in Barbados is high, but Kenneth and Etheline (Esther) Springer, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and renewed their vows yesterday, have gone against the tide.
As celebrations were held at the Church of God, Salters, St George, Reverend Jefferson Alleyne said even though Barbados boasts of being a Christian society and having an excellent family life, statistics showed the island was ranked No. 10 in the world with a divorce rate of 1.21 per 1 000 people.
He said in 2011 there were 452 divorces, while the number increased by 20 in 2012. The divorce rate for a marriage lasting up to five years was 24 per cent while for marriages lasting more than ten years, the rate was 47 per cent, Alleyne said.
While placing some of the blame for this on spouses who did not forgive and forget each other’s mistakes, Alleyne also took issue with mothers who got in the middle of relationships.
