Two handguns, hundreds of bullets and a large stash of marijuana bound for Barbados were intercepted by New York authorities on Sunday and a woman arrested.

It is the latest seizure out of North America as local police revealed that cases of drug-smuggling out of that region had been occurring with increasing regularity.

Sunday’s haul included two .40-calibre handguns, 350 bullets and four magazines along with 33 pounds of the drugs, all concealed in boxes, tubs and household products.

Twenty-four-year-old Canadian Nyesha McPherson was arrested by the Port Authority Police at JFK International Airport in New York after police alleged the items were found in her baggage.

According to an Associated Press report, police spokesman Joseph Pentangelo said the Scarborough, Ontario woman was arrested around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday in Terminal 5 with a ticket for travel to Barbados. He said McPherson was arrested without incident and was in custody.

In Barbados, police public relations officer Inspector David Welch said recent drug raids had uncovered marijuana packed in boxes or barrels among the importers’ personal effects. (AP/AC)
