THE REDEVELOPMENT of the $7million Wharf Road project, which includes major improvements to the Careenage, officially got under way yesterday.
The project is part of the overall plans for the redevelopment and rehabilitation of Bridgetown.
At a launching ceremony Deputy Prime Minister Billie Miller unveiled a sign and drilled the first hole at the point where the project will start. She told a small gathering of businessmen and other interested parties that she was delighted to finally see her dream becoming a reality.
She stated that for years the Wharf had been slowly sinking with parts of the road falling into holes – which, she added, were also becoming dangerous.
Contractor Richard Edgehill, of Edgehill Associates, said the project, which would take a year to be completed, would lead to some dislocation for motorists and pedestrians.
He said work would be done on both the north and south side of the Careenage.
