Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy has acknowledged that there may have to be a relook and retweaking of the Run Barbados series to rekindle the glory years.
Speaking over the weekend after watching the Run Barbados 10K on Saturday afternoon, Sealy called for a collaboration between the various agencies and stakeholders to revive the waning interest of the annual series that dates back to 1983.
“What I think was happening in the 1980s and the ’90s, was the colloboration between the various stakeholders and maybe we have to relook that. Mr Bayley and Geddes Grant aren’t around anymore and the leadership of the Amateur Athletic Association then is not the leadership now but there are still some capable administrators who can help us.
“There is some work to be done. I am not going to give the impression that there is nothing that can’t be done. I see a product here that is 31 years old that has done well over the years but there is a definite need to do some retweaking and rethinking.
“Even in the embracing of technology, some social media people were brought on board to help with that aspect of things but maybe we needed to involve them from earlier to get a buzz in those circles. It can’t be business as usual. We need to relook the Run Barbados series for sure. Run Barbados has a bundle of potential that has been unrealised for longer than we would have liked.”
