Barbados’ Chief Justice Sir Marston Gibson believes his High Court judges are burdened by a mountain of civil matters many of which could be settled outside of the law courts.
And he has given an assurance that by next month a preliminary practice direction on mediation will be drafted and it will be the basis for the launch of a mediation system in Barbados.
Speaking at a lecture on mediation at the Ralph Carnegie Lecture Theatre at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, on Thursday night, Sir Marston described the much touted Mediation Act as a baby; easy to conceive but hard to deliver.
He promised, however, that with amendments to the proposed legislation already completed, the new mediation programme would certainly be rolled out very soon. (SDB Media)
