The Caribbean has lost one of its champions of Press freedom in veteran Grenadian journalist Leslie Pierre.
Pierre, 86, who often lent his voice to issues related to defending the media, died in his homeland on Sunday night.
He was active in both broadcast and print media, but it was through the latter that he gained a name in his quest for truth and justice. He was detained by the People’s Revolutionary Government in 1981 for the positions taken by his paper, The Voice.
Vivian-Anne Gittens, Chief Executive Officer of the Nation Corporation Group, a member of the One Caribbean Media, yesterday lauded Pierre’s stance in defence of the free media for which he had received support from many regional organisations, including the Inter-American Press Association. (PR)
