RELIEVED AND ELATED.
These were the emotions expressed by Raphael Jordan following surgery two weeks ago to reconstruct his nose and the broken bones under his left eye.
The 21-year-old former CARIFTA athlete had suffered an orbital fracture under his lower eyelid during an incident earlier this month at University of the West Indies, Mona, in Jamaica, where he is student.
Jordan said the recovery was going well as he could see out of the eye. A few more follow-up tests are scheduled to ensure all is well.
“It looks like I will be able to have perfect vision again. I am very relieved . . . . I am elated,” Jordan told the MIDWEEK NATION yesterday.
The fracture had prevented him from opening his left eye or having any range of movement in it.
In addition to reconstruction work, doctors placed muscle and tissue under the left eye to support it.
“A titanium plate was also placed under the eye to lift it into position because when the bone broke, it had dropped and that caused some of the vision problems,” Jordan said.
With two more years of study left, he is set to return to Jamaica on January 20.
He was unsure whether his assailant had been charged. (LK)
