SEVENTY-TWO HOURS!

That three-day window is what the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) has allowed for the Ministry of Education to come back with a satisfactory solution to the problems at Parkinson Memorial and Alma Parris secondary schools.

The latest BUT ultimatum was handed down yesterday, after a less than five-minute meeting at the ministry failed to make the union any clearer on the festering issues at the two institutions.

President Pedro Shepherd has also indicated that disruption to the start of school term next week is “still real”, but he said the BUT was not going to push its hand “before time”.

An 11-member contingent, led by Shepherd, turned up at the ministry for a scheduled 10 a.m. meeting, which was with deputy chief education officers Karen Best and David Clement, deputy permanent secretary Charlie Browne and a fourth unidentified officer.

Within minutes the delegation was filing back out of the conference room, with Shepherd saying he was “in shock” at what had transpired. (YB)
