POLITICAL SCIENTIST Peter Wickham says he would support sanctions by the United States against Barbados and other Caribbean territories whose legislation marginalises those in same-sex relationships by keeping offences such as buggery on their statutes.

But in an interview with the DAILY NATION, he said he did not anticipate an American government taking such strong action against Barbados or other Caribbean nations.

He explained that across the Caribbean, the main concern was about existing legislation and not new laws.

He noted, for example, that existing legislation was clearly not being enforced even in Jamaica, which was perceived as the most homophobic country in the region.
